Unit Plan 16 (PreK Social Studies): Caring for Our Earth
Promote Earth care with PreK lessons on noticing nature, sorting recycling, and keeping spaces clean through simple, hands-on environmental actions.
Focus: Help children notice the world around them (trees, grass, sky, playground) and learn simple ways to care for it, such as picking up litter, recycling, and reducing waste.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Social Studies (Geography • Environmental Awareness)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 15–20 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, children learn that the Earth is our home and that we can take care of it with small actions every day. Through stories, pictures, and simple clean-up routines, they observe their classroom, playground, and outdoor spaces, and notice when places are clean or messy. They begin to understand that picking up trash, recycling, and using less can help plants, animals, and people.
Essential Questions
- What do we see in our environment (trees, grass, sky, trash, toys)?
- How can we tell if a place is clean or messy?
- What are some small ways we can help take care of our classroom, playground, and Earth?
- How do we feel when our spaces are clean and cared for?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Name or point to at least one natural feature in their environment (tree, grass, sky, flower, etc.).
- Describe or show the difference between a clean and a messy area.

- Participate in at least one simple caring action, such as helping with a small classroom cleanup or recycling routine.
Standards Alignment — PreK (C3-based custom)
