Unit Plan 2 (PreK Social Studies): Rules Keep Us Safe

Focus: Help children understand that rules keep us safe, fair, and kind at school and in the community. Students explore why we have rules, act out safety scenarios, and use pictures and conversations to share what they have learned. The unit ends with a simple kindness/safety project that helps others (e.g., posters or thank-you cards).

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Inquiry • Community)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 15–20 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, children take a closer look at rules—what they are, why we have them, and how they help keep people safe and treated fairly. Through stories, pictures, and role-play, students explore situations with and without rules, noticing how rules help us walk safely, take turns, and stay kind. They practice talking about what they see and feel, and they share their ideas with drawings and simple comments.

Essential Questions

  • Why do we have rules at school and in our community?
  • How do rules help keep us safe, fair, and kind?
  • What happens when we follow rules? What might happen if we don’t?
  • How can we help others by reminding them about safety and kindness?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Follow key safety-focused classroom rules (walking feet, gentle hands, listening to adults) with visual and adult support.
  2. Act out simple safety scenarios that show the difference between following and not following a rule.
  3. Use drawings and talk to share what they noticed or learned about rules and safety.
  4. Participate with the class in a small project that helps others (e.g., making safety reminder posters or thank-you cards for helpers).

Standards Alignment — PreK (C3-based custom)

  • PK.C3.Civ.1 — Follow classroom routines and rules; understands that rules keep us safe, fair, and kind.
    • Example: Taking turns during centers.
  • PK.C3.Inq.3 — Use pictures and conversations to share learning; draws or talks about what they notice, think, or learn.
    • Example: Sharing a drawing of their neighborhood walk.
  • PK.C3.Inq.4 — Participate in class projects that help others; takes part in simple service or kindness actions.
    • Example: Making thank-you cards for school helpers.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can follow rules that help keep me and my friends safe.
  • I can act out how to be safe in our classroom or hallway.
  • I can draw or talk about a rule that keeps us safe.
  • I can help my class make something kind for others (like a card or poster).
