I. Introduction

This Grade 1 counseling lesson helps students understand that every person has body boundaries. Students learn that personal space means the space around a person’s body, and respectful classmates pay attention to words, body language, and school expectations. The lesson uses simple, safe language to help students practice asking for space and respecting when someone else asks for space.

The counselor reviews safe and responsible choices such as keeping hands and feet to self, asking before touching someone’s belongings or body, using kind words, stopping when someone says “stop,” and telling a trusted adult if a boundary is not respected. Students practice phrases such as “Please stop,” “I need space,” “No thank you,” and “I need help.” The goal is for students to understand that respecting body boundaries helps everyone feel safer, calmer, and more comfortable at school.
