Unit Plan 2 (Grade 1 Library): Book Care and Library Responsibility
Teach Grade 1 book care, library responsibility, safe routines, and respectful use of books, materials, technology, and shared spaces.
Focus: Help Grade 1 students strengthen their understanding of how to care for books, library materials, technology, and shared spaces responsibly. Students practice carrying books safely, turning pages gently, keeping materials clean, using shelves and return bins correctly, and showing growing independence during library routines.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Library (Book Care • Responsibility • Routines/Participation)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Grade 1 students build the habits they need to care for books and shared library materials with increasing responsibility. Students learn that books, baskets, bins, headphones, and workspaces are part of a shared library community and should be treated with care. Because Grade 1 students are ready for a bit more independence than Kindergarten, this unit moves beyond simple reminders and includes guided practice with browsing baskets, return bins, shelves, cleanup, and careful handling. Through sorting activities, role-play, and shared discussion, students begin to understand that responsible choices help books last longer and help the library stay welcoming for everyone.
Essential Questions
- How do we take care of books and library materials so they stay ready for everyone?
- What does it look like to use shelves, bins, baskets, materials, and shared spaces responsibly?
