Unit Plan 31 (Grade 1 Library): Books, Audio, Images, and Tools for Learning
Grade 1 library unit where students explore print books, audio stories, images, and tools while practicing safe, respectful use.
Focus: Help Grade 1 students explore different ways the library supports learning through print books, audio stories, image-based resources, and simple response tools. Students rotate through multiple formats, notice what each one helps them do, and practice using materials and technology safely and respectfully.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Library (Formats for Learning • Response/Understanding • Responsible Use)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Grade 1 students understand that the library supports learning in more than one format. In a modern school library, students may read print books, listen to audio stories, study photographs or image-based resources, and use simple tools to respond to what they learned. This unit gives students guided experience with several of these formats so they begin noticing that each one can support understanding in a different way. The librarian can help students see that books, audio, images, and tools all belong in the library and that thoughtful learners know how to use each one safely, respectfully, and meaningfully.
Essential Questions
- How can books, audio, images, and tools help me learn in the library?
- What does each format help me do as a reader or learner?
- How can I show what I understood after using a book, audio story, image, or tool?
- How can I use shared materials and technology safely and responsibly?
