Unit Plan 4 (Grade 1 Library): Choosing Books with Purpose

Focus: Help Grade 1 students begin choosing books with purpose by thinking about their interests, topics, favorite authors or series, and learning goals. Students practice browsing with more intention by noticing covers, titles, familiar characters, and simple purposes such as “I want a story” or “I want to learn something.”

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Library (Book ChoiceWondering/InquiryReading Growth)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 1 students move beyond choosing books only because they look exciting or familiar. Students begin to understand that readers can choose books for different reasons: because they like a topic, enjoy a certain kind of story, want to learn something new, or want to try a different kind of book or tool. Through modeling, browsing practice, shared discussion, and simple reflection, students learn to connect book choice to interest, purpose, and curiosity. This is a realistic next step for Grade 1 because students are ready to explain their choices in simple ways and begin building early reading identities.

Essential Questions

  • How can I choose a book because it fits my interest, topic, or purpose?
  • What clues can help me choose a book, such as the cover, title, author, series, or pictures?
  • How can my questions and wonderings help me choose what to read?
  • How can trying a new kind of book or tool help me grow as a reader and learner?
