Unit Plan 3 (Grade 1 Library): How to Listen, Notice, and Respond
Teach Grade 1 active listening, story response, turn-and-talk, respectful discussion, and simple observations, questions, and connections.
Focus: Teach students how to be active listeners during read-alouds and class discussions by helping them look closely, listen for important details, and respond with a thought, question, or connection. Students practice turn-and-talk routines, raising hands, waiting for others to speak, and sharing simple ideas that support the learning of the whole class.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Library (Listening • Discussion • Story Response)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Grade 1 students grow from passive listeners into active participants during library read-alouds and discussions. Students learn that listening in library means more than being quiet—it means looking carefully, noticing details, thinking about what they hear and see, and responding in helpful ways. Through picture walks, shared stories, turn-and-talk, and guided class discussion, students practice making observations, predictions, and simple connections. Because Grade 1 students are just beginning to contribute more meaningful oral responses, the unit provides clear routines, sentence stems, and repeated practice with respectful discussion habits.
