I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 1 students build more independence during library centers. By this point in the year, many first graders are ready to sustain attention for longer periods and make more purposeful choices, especially when routines are clear. Through browsing, listening, drawing, puppets, simple response writing, and topic baskets, students practice choosing activities that fit their interests while also learning how to manage volume, materials, cleanup, and transitions responsibly. The goal is to help students see center time as both a chance to explore and a chance to show that they can learn more independently in the library.

Essential Questions

  • How can I make a good choice during library center time?
  • What does it look like to use materials, technology, and shared spaces safely and responsibly?
  • How can trying a new center, book, or tool help me grow as a library learner?
  • What routines help center time stay calm, focused, and ready for everyone?
