I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 1 students see that they can contribute meaningfully to the library community. At this point in the year, many students are ready for small helper roles that allow them to show responsibility, leadership, and care for shared spaces. The librarian can invite students to organize baskets, pass out materials, model a routine, help reset a center, or contribute an idea during a shared task. These roles should stay simple and structured, but they can help students feel proud of the way they support the class and keep the library running smoothly.

  • What does it mean to share materials, take turns, and help with routines?
