Unit Plan 32 (Grade 1 Library): Looking Back at What We Learned
Grade 1 library unit where students reflect on growth in routines, discussion, book choice, sorting, and respectful participation.
Focus: Help Grade 1 students reflect on how much they have grown as library learners by revisiting routines, discussion habits, book choice, questioning, and sorting/organizing skills. Students notice what they can do now in library and create a simple reflection that shows one or more ways they have grown.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Library (Reflection • Growth • Library Skills)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This review unit helps Grade 1 students pause and notice how much they have learned in library over the year. Early in the year, many students needed strong support with routines, discussion, book choice, and handling materials. By this point, students are often ready to reflect on how they now choose books more purposefully, ask stronger questions, discuss stories more clearly, and sort or organize materials with greater confidence. This unit gives students a chance to revisit familiar library experiences and compare what they could do before with what they can do now. The tone should be positive and affirming, helping students see that they have become more capable, thoughtful, and independent library learners.
Essential Questions
- How have I grown as a library learner this year?
- What can I do now in library that felt harder at the beginning of the year?
- How can I show what I have learned about books, materials, and discussion?
- Why is it important to notice and celebrate our learning growth?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Share observations, simple connections, and reflections about what they have learned in library.
- Sort and group books or materials in simple ways by topic, type, purpose, or feature.
- Participate respectfully in reading, listening, discussing, viewing, creating, and sharing in the library.
- Compare earlier library routines or skills with what they can do now.
- Create or share a reflection that shows one or more ways they have grown as library learners.
- (Optional Sessions) Strengthen reflection and review through repeated practice with discussion, sorting, and simple self-assessment of library growth.
Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (AASL-based Custom)

- Example: A student helps organize books into categories such as animals, weather, stories, and biographies.
- L:S6.1c — Participate respectfully in reading, listening, discussing, viewing, creating, and sharing in the library.
- Example: A student listens during a read-aloud and responds appropriately during discussion or sharing time.
