Unit Plan 8 (Grade 1 Library): Retelling Through Play and Talk

Focus: Help Grade 1 students deepen comprehension by retelling stories through oral language, props, puppets, dramatization, drawing, and shared talk. Students practice putting key events in order, taking on simple story roles, and showing understanding through playful, structured story response.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Library (Story ComprehensionResponse/ExpressionCollaboration)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 1 students grow from simply enjoying a story to retelling it in meaningful ways. Using familiar, highly structured texts, students practice remembering characters, important events, and what happened first, next, and last. Because many Grade 1 students are ready for more complete retellings than Kindergarteners, the librarian can support them with puppets, props, sequencing cards, dramatization, and partner talk. The unit emphasizes that retelling is not only repeating words from the story—it is a way to show understanding through play, talk, movement, art, and shared response.

Essential Questions

  • How can I retell a story to show what happened?
  • How do play, talk, props, and dramatization help me remember story events?
  • What helps me retell a story in the right order: first, next, and last?
  • How can I work with a partner or group to share a story response?
