Unit Plan 21 (Grade 1 Library): Sorting and Organizing Library Materials
Help Grade 1 students sort and organize library books and materials by topic, type, purpose, or feature while practicing teamwork and book care.
Focus: Help Grade 1 students begin thinking like library organizers by sorting books and materials into meaningful categories such as topic, type, purpose, or feature. Students work with a partner or small group to group items, explain simple choices, and practice caring for materials responsibly as they organize them.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Library (Organization • Collaboration • Book/Material Care)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Grade 1 students move beyond simply choosing books and begin noticing how books and materials can be organized in meaningful ways. With teacher support, students learn that books can go together because they share a topic, type, purpose, or visible feature, and that thoughtful grouping helps readers find what they need. Because first graders are ready for more purposeful sorting than Kindergarteners, this unit gives them simple, concrete categories and structured partner work. At the same time, students strengthen habits of careful handling, organized return, and respectful use of shared library materials.
Essential Questions
- How can we sort and organize books and library materials in meaningful ways?
- What clues help us know which books or materials belong together?
