Unit Plan 5 (Grade 1 Library): Wondering About Books and Pictures
Help Grade 1 students ask questions, notice details, and share wonderings during library read-alouds, picture walks, and browsing.
Focus: Help Grade 1 students build the habit of asking questions and noticing details during read-alouds, picture walks, and book browsing. Students practice sharing wonderings, observations, predictions, and simple connections as they look closely at books and pictures and begin using those ideas to build understanding.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Library (Inquiry • Listening/Viewing • Story Response)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Grade 1 students become more curious, observant, and verbal during library learning. As students listen to stories, explore pictures, and browse books, they practice pausing to say what they notice, what they wonder, and what they think might happen. The librarian models how pictures, labels, simple text features, and conversation help students build understanding. This is a strong fit for Grade 1 because students are ready to make more specific observations and to begin sharing them in simple but meaningful ways.
Essential Questions
- How can I use “I notice…” and “I wonder…” to think more deeply about books and pictures?
- What can pictures, labels, and other book clues help me understand?
- How do my observations, predictions, and connections help me learn during library?
- How can listening to classmates’ ideas help me notice and wonder even more?
