Unit Plan 31 (Grade 1 PE): Cooperative Castle Builders

Focus: Help students build rolling accuracy, simple movement sequences, and strong teamwork through playful castle-building and castle-knocking games.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Physical Education (Object ControlMovement SequencesCooperation & Respect)

Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students begin combining building, rolling, and teamwork in a fun game that feels creative and active. In Grade 1 PE, students benefit from learning that object-control games can include more than just one skill. They may need to collect equipment, build a target, roll a ball with control, and work respectfully with teammates during the same activity. This unit begins with cone stacking races and then moves into Castle Ball Lite, where teams build cone castles and gently roll balls to knock them down. The goal is to help students practice rolling with accuracy, complete simple movement-and-skill sequences, and learn that respectful teamwork helps the game work better.

Essential Questions

  • How can I roll a ball with more accuracy?
  • What happens when I combine moving, building, and rolling in one game?
  • How can I be a helpful and respectful teammate?
  • How does teamwork help a group game feel more fun?
