Focus: Help students follow simple instructions and signals through playful movement games that build listening, self-control, safety, and quick response to cues.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Physical Education (Listening Skills • Rules & Safety • Movement Response)
Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students build success in PE when they can listen, stop, start, and change actions quickly and safely. In Grade 1, these skills are especially important because movement games become more fun and more organized when students understand how to respond to simple verbal and visual cues. This unit uses a playful Coach Says warm-up and a fun Color Cone Commands game to help students practice listening closely, following directions, and changing movement or skill actions based on signals. The goal is to help students feel confident responding to cues while staying safe, active, and engaged.
Essential Questions
