Unit Plan 8 (Grade 1 PE): Locomotor Circuits

Explore Grade 1 PE locomotor circuits that build coordination, sequencing, active participation, and confidence through fun movement stations.

Unit Plan 8 (Grade 1 PE): Locomotor Circuits

Focus: Help students combine multiple locomotor skills in sequence through active station circuits that build coordination, movement memory, and confidence.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Physical Education (Locomotor SkillsMovement SequencesActive Participation)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 3 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students continue building locomotor strength and coordination by practicing how different movement skills can connect together in a sequence. Instead of doing only one movement at a time, students begin to move from running to hopping, from galloping to jumping, and from one station to the next in a fun circuit format. In this unit, students begin with quick locomotor call-outs and then move into a Locomotor Stations Circuit, where each station features a different locomotor challenge. Some stations also add a very simple object-control action, helping students connect movement patterns in a playful and age-appropriate way. The goal is to help students stay active, remember movement cues, and feel successful combining skills.

Essential Questions

  • How can I do more than one locomotor skill in the same activity?
  • What helps me move from one skill to another with control?
  • How can I stay active and safe during station circuits?
  • How do movement sequences help me become a stronger mover?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Perform basic locomotor skills such as running, hopping, galloping, sliding, leaping, and jumping with improving control.
  2. Combine two or more movement actions in a simple sequence during circuit stations.
  3. Use very simple object-control actions within a movement sequence when directed.
  4. Participate actively in circuit-style PE activities for much of class time.

Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.1a Perform basic locomotor skills (run, hop, gallop, slide, leap, and jump) with improved control and coordination.
    • Example: Students travel across the gym using different locomotor movements in response to teacher cues.
  • PE:S1.1d Combine locomotor and object-control skills in simple movement sequences or games.
    • Example: Students run to retrieve a ball, throw it toward a target, and return to a starting spot.
  • PE:S3.1a Participate actively in moderate-to-vigorous physical activities during class.
    • Example: Students engage in running, jumping, and movement games for sustained periods.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can do more than one movement in a row.
  • I can run, hop, gallop, slide, leap, and jump during stations.
  • I can follow a simple movement sequence with control.
  • I can stay active and keep trying at each station.
