Unit Plan 15 (Grade 1 PE): Object Control Stations
Grade 1 PE unit with fun object-control stations where students practice rolling, tossing, catching, kicking, and striking while building coordination, sequencing, and active engagement.
Focus: Help students practice multiple object-control skills in one lesson by rotating through playful stations that include rolling, tossing, catching, kicking, and striking.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Physical Education (Object Control • Movement Sequences • Active Participation)
Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students continue building confidence with object-control skills by practicing several of them in one active circuit lesson. Instead of focusing on just one skill, students rotate through stations that let them revisit rolling, tossing, catching, kicking, and striking in short, success-friendly challenges. This unit helps students notice how different tools and body parts are used to control objects, and it also gives them chances to connect movement with simple action sequences. The goal is to help students stay active, try multiple skills, and feel successful using different kinds of equipment in playful station-based games.
Essential Questions
- How can I use different object-control skills in PE?
- What helps me control an object with my hands, feet, or a paddle?
- How can I move from one action to another in a simple sequence?
- How can I stay active and safe while rotating through stations?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate developing object-control skills such as rolling, tossing, catching, kicking, and striking.
- Combine simple locomotor and object-control actions in short station sequences.
- Participate actively in circuit-style PE activities for much of class time.
- Follow station directions and safe equipment routines during group play.
Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.1c Demonstrate basic object-control skills such as rolling, throwing, catching, kicking, and striking with developing accuracy.
- Example: Students throw a ball toward a target or catch a ball tossed by a partner.
- PE:S1.1d Combine locomotor and object-control skills in simple movement sequences or games.
- Example: Students run to retrieve a ball, throw it toward a target, and return to a starting spot.
- PE:S3.1a Participate actively in moderate-to-vigorous physical activities during class.
- Example: Students engage in running, jumping, and movement games for sustained periods.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can practice rolling, tossing, catching, kicking, and striking.
- I can do a simple movement and skill sequence at a station.
- I can stay active and keep trying at each station.
- I can follow directions and use equipment safely.
