Unit Plan 21 (Grade 1 PE): Personal Space Bubble

Focus: Help students understand personal space and general space by moving safely around others, protecting their “bubble,” and following clear PE rules and routines in fun movement games.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Physical Education (Space AwarenessRules & SafetySafe Movement)

Total Unit Duration: 2 core sessions + 2 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students build safer movement habits in PE by learning the difference between personal space and general space. In Grade 1, this means understanding that each student has a “bubble” around their body and that moving through the gym safely requires looking up, slowing down when needed, and staying aware of others. This unit uses a simple poly spot warm-up and a fun Bubble Tag game to help students practice moving near others without bumping, pushing, or crowding. The goal is to help students feel successful, active, and safe while learning that good movement includes both body control and respect for space.

Essential Questions

  • What is my personal space bubble in PE?
  • How is general space different from personal space?
  • How can I move safely when many students are moving at the same time?
  • How do rules and routines help movement games stay safe and fun?
