Unit Plan 5 (Grade 1 Social Studies): Being a Good Citizen

Focus: Help students understand what it means to be a good citizen in the classroom and school community by practicing respect, responsibility, and cooperation through stories, role-plays, and simple games.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Community • Social Skills)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students explore what it means to be a good citizen at school. Through read-alouds, picture discussions, and cooperative games, they learn and practice respect (kind words and actions), responsibility (taking care of self and materials), and cooperation (working and playing fairly with others). Students connect these ideas to everyday moments—lining up, sharing supplies, listening during circle time—and see that their choices help everyone feel safe, included, and ready to learn.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to be a good citizen in our classroom and school?
  • How do respect, responsibility, and cooperation help everyone feel safe and included?
  • What are some ways we can work together, share, and take turns during learning and play?
  • How can we solve problems peacefully and make fair decisions in our classroom community?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Describe respect, responsibility, and cooperation in their own words using classroom examples.
  2. Identify and act out at least two ways to show respect (kind words, listening, gentle hands) and responsibility (cleaning up, returning materials).
  3. Participate in cooperative games and class meetings by listening, taking turns, and sharing ideas.
  4. Practice simple voting and accepting group decisions in a friendly way.
  5. Create a “I Can Be a Good Citizen” mini-page or badge that shows one way they will be respectful, responsible, or cooperative at school.

Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 1.C3.Civ.5 — Demonstrate responsibility and respect in diverse communities.
    • Example: Use kind words and care for shared materials; include others.
  • 1.C3.Civ.3 — Practice civic participation (listening, taking turns, simple voting, sharing).
    • Example: Vote on a class activity and accept the result.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can tell one way to show respect to classmates and teachers.
  • I can tell one way to show responsibility with my things and classroom materials.
  • I can work and play cooperatively by sharing, taking turns, and using kind words.
  • I can listen when others talk and wait for my turn to speak in a group.
  • I can help make and follow a class decision even when it is not what I chose.
