Unit Plan 24 (Grade 1 Social Studies): Community Helpers Through History
Community helpers have always kept people safe and supported, and this unit helps students compare their jobs, tools, and vehicles long ago versus today using simple pictures and stories.
Focus: Help students explore community helpers (like firefighters, mail carriers, doctors) and see how their jobs, tools, and vehicles have changed from long ago to today using simple pictures and stories.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: Social Studies (Economics • History • Community Life)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students learn that community helpers have always worked to keep people safe, healthy, and supported, even though their tools, vehicles, and uniforms have changed over time. They compare old and new pictures of helpers such as firefighters (old fire trucks vs. new ones), police officers, mail carriers, and doctors. Using short read-alouds and photo sets, they practice retelling who the helper is, where they work, and why their job matters. The week ends with a “Helper Then and Now” page or mini-book about one community helper.
Essential Questions
- Who are community helpers, and what services do they provide?
- How have the jobs of helpers like firefighters and mail carriers changed from long ago to today?
- How can pictures, stories, and artifacts help us learn about helpers in the past?
- Why are community helpers important to our lives now and in the past?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Identify community helpers (e.g., firefighters, mail carriers, doctors) and tell whether they mainly provide goods or services.
- Use pictures and simple stories to describe what a community helper did long ago and what they do today.
- Retell who, where, and why for a community helper’s job using ideas from a read-aloud or photo set.
- Name at least one way a helper’s job or tools have changed (e.g., “Fire trucks got bigger and have more safety tools.”).
- Create a “Helper Then and Now” comparison page (or mini-book) showing how one community helper’s work and tools have changed over time.
Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (C3-based custom)
- 1.C3.Econ.2 — Identify goods and services and who provides them.
- Example: A baker makes bread (goods); a mechanic fixes cars (services).
- 1.C3.Hist.5 — Use simple sources to learn about the past and retell key details.
- Example: After a read-aloud on community history, retell who, where, and why.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can name community helpers and say if they provide goods or services.
- I can tell who a helper is, where they work, and why their job is important.
- I can look at old and new pictures of a helper and say how the job or tools changed.
