Unit Plan 8 (Grade 1 Social Studies): Working Together to Help Others

Focus: Guide students to plan and carry out a small kindness or service activity (thank-you notes, clean-up, appreciation posters) that helps people in their classroom or school, while practicing respect, responsibility, and inclusion.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Inquiry • Community)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students learn that they can work together to help others and make their classroom and school a better place. They think about kindness, responsibility, and inclusion, and they notice helpers in their daily lives. Then, as a class, they plan and carry out a small kindness or service project—such as writing thank-you notes, making appreciation posters, or doing a classroom clean-up. Along the way, they practice listening to each other, sharing ideas, and following through on a plan.

Essential Questions

  • How can our class work together to help others?
  • What does it look like and sound like when we show kindness, respect, and responsibility?
  • How can one small action (like a note, poster, or clean-up) make a difference for someone?
  • Why is it important to include others when we plan and do a project?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Brainstorm ways that our class can help others in the classroom or school.
  2. Help choose one small project (kindness or service) that the class can do together.
  3. Share a few reasons (in simple language) why the project is helpful and kind.
  4. Take part in at least one role in the project (drawing, writing, cleaning, delivering, or speaking).
  5. Reflect on how their actions showed respect, responsibility, and inclusion.

Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 1.C3.Inq.5 — Take informed action in a small, class project.
    • Example: Plan a lost-and-found clean-up or thank-you notes for helpers.
  • 1.C3.Civ.5 — Demonstrate responsibility and respect in diverse communities.
    • Example: Use kind words and care for shared materials; include others.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can share ideas for how our class can help others.
  • I can help choose and plan a kindness or service project.
  • I can explain why our project is helpful and kind.
  • I can do my part in the project (drawing, writing, cleaning, delivering, or helping in another way).
  • I can tell how I showed respect, responsibility, or inclusion during this project.
