Unit Plan 2 (Grade 2 Library): Book Care, Checkout, and Responsibility

Focus: Help students strengthen independence with book care, checkout routines, and responsibility for borrowed materials. Students practice handling books correctly, using shelves and return bins appropriately, and understanding that library books are shared resources that must be treated with respect.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Library (Book CareCheckoutResponsibility)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 2 students build stronger independence with one of the most important parts of library learning: caring for shared books and materials. The librarian models how to hold books carefully, turn pages gently, use shelves and return bins correctly, and take responsibility for borrowed items from checkout to return. Because Grade 2 students are usually ready for more ownership than younger students, this unit includes role-play, scenario sorting, and repeated practice with real library routines. The goal is to help students understand that books are shared resources that deserve respect and that responsible book care helps the whole library community.

Essential Questions

  • Why is book care important in the library?
