Unit Plan 4 (Grade 2 Library): Choosing Books for Interest and Purpose

Focus: Help students begin choosing books with more intention and purpose. Students learn that a book can be chosen because it looks fun, connects to a topic of interest, is by a favorite author, matches a type of text they enjoy, or helps them learn something new.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Library (Book ChoiceWondering/InquiryReading Growth)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 2 students move beyond choosing books only because of a bright cover or a quick first impression. The librarian models that readers can choose books for many good reasons, such as enjoyment, curiosity, learning, a favorite author, a familiar series, or a specific topic they want to know more about. Students practice browsing, asking questions, and explaining why a book feels like a good fit. This is a realistic Grade 2 library unit because students at this age are beginning to make more thoughtful reading choices and can explain what they hope a book will offer them.

Essential Questions

  • Why do readers choose books for different reasons?
  • How can a book match my interest, topic, or purpose?
  • What kinds of questions and wonderings can help me choose a book?
  • How can trying new books, genres, and formats help me grow as a reader?
