Unit Plan 15 (Grade 2 Library): Library Centers with Independence and Purpose
Grade 2 library centers unit on purposeful choice, independence, and responsibility as students select centers, set goals, and use materials well.

Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Library (Centers • Choice • Independence/Responsibility)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Grade 2 students move from simply enjoying centers to using them with more intention. At this stage of the year, many students can handle greater independence when routines are clear and expectations are consistent. The librarian can offer centers such as listening, browsing, response writing, topic baskets, retelling tools, and a simple digital activity, but students are expected to do more than just choose what looks fun. They begin practicing how to choose a center for a reason, explain what they plan to do there, and work responsibly with books, tools, materials, and shared spaces. This is realistic for Grade 2 because students are increasingly able to connect their choices to learning goals when supported with clear routines and modeling.
