Unit Plan 10 (Grade 2 Library): Questions That Help Us Learn

Grade 2 library inquiry unit on asking questions, using books and images for clues, and building learning through wonderings across lessons.

Unit Plan 10 (Grade 2 Library): Questions That Help Us Learn

Focus: Help students understand that questions can guide learning and exploration. Students learn how to ask questions about a topic, use books and images to begin answering those questions, and keep track of new wonderings as they learn more.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Library (InquiryQuestioningInformation Use)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 2 students see that questions are not just something readers ask during a story. Questions can also guide learning across more than one lesson. The librarian models how to ask a question about a class topic, how to look closely at a book, picture, heading, label, or caption for clues, and how one answer can lead to new wonderings. Students may participate in a mini inquiry on a class-chosen topic and revisit their questions across multiple sessions. This is realistic for Grade 2 because students are ready for early, guided inquiry cycles when the process is clear, visual, and well supported.

Essential Questions

  • How can questions help us learn about a topic?
  • What can books, pictures, headings, labels, and captions help us understand?
  • How do readers and learners keep track of new wonderings?
  • How can one question lead to more learning?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Ask questions and share wonderings about stories, information, images, and topics introduced in library.
  2. Use read-alouds, pictures, headings, labels, captions, and discussion to begin finding information or building understanding.
  3. Share observations, predictions, connections, and beginning conclusions about stories and topics.
  4. Identify one or more questions that guide a short inquiry about a class topic.
  5. Explain how a book, image, or text feature helped answer or deepen a question.
  6. (Optional Sessions) Strengthen inquiry habits by revisiting questions, gathering clues from multiple sources, and sharing new wonderings.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (AASL-based Custom)

  • L:S1.2a — Ask questions and share wonderings about stories, information, images, and topics introduced in library.
    • Example: A student asks, “Why do leaves change color?” after reading a seasonal nonfiction book.
  • L:S1.2b — Use read-alouds, pictures, headings, labels, captions, and discussion to begin finding information or building understanding.
    • Example: A student uses a caption and photo to explain what an animal eats.
  • L:S1.2c — Share observations, predictions, connections, and beginning conclusions about stories and topics.
    • Example: A student explains, “I think this animal lives in the desert because the picture shows sand and no trees.”
