Unit Plan 35 (Grade 2 Library): What Kind of Reader and Learner Am I?

Focus: Help students reflect on their reading identity and library preferences. Students think about what kinds of books, topics, activities, and tools help them enjoy learning in library, and they begin naming simple strengths and preferences as readers and learners.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Library (ReflectionReading IdentityLearning Preferences)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 2 students reflect on who they are becoming as readers and learners in the library. By this point in the year, students have experienced many different books, topics, activities, routines, and tools. Some students may notice that they enjoy informational books, while others may prefer stories, poetry, or discussion-based lessons. Some may like talking about books, while others may feel strongest when drawing, building, or creating a project after reading. The librarian can guide students in thinking about these preferences in simple, positive ways so they begin to understand that readers and learners are not all exactly alike. This is realistic for Grade 2 because students are increasingly able to name what helps them learn and what kinds of reading experiences feel most meaningful to them.

Essential Questions

  • What kinds of books, topics, activities, and tools help me enjoy learning in library?
