Unit Plan 33 (Grade 2 PE): Dance, Rhythm, and Fun
Boost Grade 2 coordination and activity with rhythmic PE lessons featuring dance, locomotor skills, and joyful movement to music.
Focus: Build rhythmic movement, coordination, and joyful participation through clap-step patterns, simple dance sequences, and follow-along routines that keep students active and moving to music.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Physical Education (Locomotor Skills • Active Participation • Enjoyment of Movement)
Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students explore how movement and music work together to create fun, expressive, and active physical activity. This unit helps students use locomotor skills such as stepping, sliding, hopping, jumping, and skipping in rhythmic patterns that match a beat. Students begin with clap-and-step patterns and simple line-dance style movements, then move into Follow-Along Dance or Just Dance Kids–style routines that encourage full-body coordination and steady movement. The unit is designed to help students feel successful, stay active for much of class, and experience that physical activity can also feel creative, joyful, and social.
Essential Questions
- How can I move my body to a beat or rhythm?
- What helps me stay coordinated when a dance pattern changes?
- How can dancing be a fun way to stay active?
- How can I keep trying and enjoy movement even if I do not know every step right away?
