Unit Plan 30 (Grade 2 PE): Guarding & Scoring in Goal Games
Build Grade 2 soccer understanding with dribbling, open space movement, and safe defensive positioning in engaging small-sided goal games.
Focus: Build beginning offense and defense understanding in simple goal games by helping students dribble with control, create open space, and guard the goal safely in small-sided play.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Physical Education (Object Control • Simple Game Play • Rules & Safety)
Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students begin learning that goal games are not only about kicking the ball. They are also about where to move, how to protect space, and how to make safe choices when attacking or defending. In this unit, students practice dribbling and trapping the ball with their feet, then apply those skills in a simple 2v2 Mini-Goal Game. They begin noticing two important game ideas: on offense, players can move to open space to create a better chance to score; on defense, players can try to stay between an opponent and the goal. The unit is designed to keep game play simple, active, and successful while helping students build confidence in both scoring and guarding.
Essential Questions
- How can I keep the ball close while I dribble in a goal game?
- What does it mean to move to open space on offense?
- How can I guard the goal safely on defense?
- How do rules, boundaries, and safety help goal games work well?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate foot dribbling and trapping with improving control in small game spaces.
- Move to open space on offense to support scoring opportunities.
- Show a beginning defensive idea by trying to stay between an opponent and the goal.
- Follow game rules, boundaries, and safety routines during 2v2 play.
Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.2d – Object Control: Kicking & Dribbling Kick a stationary and slowly moving ball toward a target and demonstrate simple foot dribbling in a controlled space.
- Example: Students dribble a ball with their feet through a set of cones and then kick it into a goal.
- PE:S2.2d – Simple Offensive & Defensive Concepts Begin to demonstrate basic offensive and defensive ideas such as moving to open space and staying between an opponent and a goal.
- Example: In a simple keep-away game, students move to open spaces to receive a pass or stand between the ball and a target.
- PE:S4.2a – Rules, Routines, and Safety Follow established rules, procedures, and safety expectations in physical education and game settings.
- Example: Students wait for a signal before starting a relay and stay behind boundary lines when required.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can dribble the ball with small touches and stop it with control.
