Unit Plan 24 (Grade 2 PE): Rules & Safety in Group Games

Focus: Build strong understanding of rules, procedures, and safety in group games by helping students follow signals, respect boundaries, stop safely, and move with awareness around others.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Physical Education (Rules & SafetySpace AwarenessGroup Game Readiness)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students learn that group games work best when everyone understands how to move safely, listen for signals, and respect shared space. This unit focuses on the routines that help PE feel organized and successful, including stopping on signal, staying inside boundaries, moving with control, and noticing where other students are in general space. Through a guided walk-through of procedures and simple game formats such as Modified Scooter Highway or Cone Island Game, students practice following rules while still staying active and engaged. The goal is to help students understand that safety rules are not just about control from the teacher—they help everyone play, move, and learn with confidence.

Essential Questions

  • Why are rules, signals, and boundaries important in group games?
  • How can I stop, start, and move safely when many students are playing together?
  • What helps me use general space without bumping into others?
  • How does following safety procedures help games feel more fun and fair?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Follow PE rules, routines, and safety procedures during warm-ups and group games.
