Unit Plan 26 (Grade 3 Library): Retelling, Performing, and Presenting

Focus: Help students communicate understanding through retelling, performance, and oral presentation. Students may act out a scene, retell with props, or orally present a simple story or topic response while focusing on clarity, sequencing, shared responsibility, and audience awareness.

Grade Level: 3

Subject Area: Library (Oral CommunicationPerformanceResponse/Presentation)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 3 students turn reading and learning into spoken performance and presentation. In library, students often respond to stories and informational topics through writing or discussion, but they also benefit from opportunities to share ideas aloud in a clear, organized way. The librarian helps students practice retelling a story in sequence, performing an important scene, or presenting a simple topic response with enough detail for an audience to understand. Because Grade 3 students are often excited by performance and are increasingly able to organize their speaking, this unit gives them a realistic and engaging way to show understanding while practicing collaboration, responsibility, and communication.

  • Why do clarity and sequencing matter when presenting to an audience?
