Unit Plan 14 (Grade 4 Counselor): Problem-Solving Steps
Teach Grade 4 students problem-solving steps to pause, predict consequences, choose safe solutions, and resolve conflicts respectfully.
Focus: Teach students a complete problem-solving process: pause, calm down, name the problem, consider choices, predict consequences, choose a safe solution, and reflect on the result. Students practice with realistic scenarios from group work, recess, classroom disagreements, and friendship misunderstandings. The counselor helps students choose solutions that are safe, respectful, and likely to help rather than make the problem bigger.
Grade Level: 4
Subject Area: School Counseling (Problem-Solving • Conflict Resolution • Responsible Choices)
Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This Grade 4 counseling lesson teaches students that problems are easier to solve when they slow down and use clear steps. Instead of reacting quickly when they feel angry, embarrassed, frustrated, or left out, students learn to pause, calm down, name the problem, think about choices, predict consequences, choose a safe solution, and reflect on what happened.
Students practice the problem-solving process with realistic Grade 4 situations involving group work, recess, classroom disagreements, friendship misunderstandings, shared materials, and hurt feelings. The counselor emphasizes that good problem-solving does not mean always getting exactly what one person wants. It means choosing a response that is safe, respectful, responsible, and likely to help the situation improve.
