Subject Area: Library (Reading ChoiceInquiryGrowth/Reflection)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 4 students move beyond choosing books only because they are familiar or easy to spot. Students learn that readers make purposeful choices for different reasons: to enjoy a story, to learn about a topic, to continue with a favorite author or series, or to try a new genre or format. Through browsing practice, questioning, discussion, and reflection, students begin to see themselves as readers with growing identities and changing goals. The unit emphasizes that thoughtful book selection is part of becoming a stronger, more independent library learner.

Essential Questions

  • How do I choose books and materials based on purpose, interest, topic, genre, author, series, or information need?
  • What kinds of questions can help guide my reading choices?
  • How can trying a new genre, format, or tool help me grow as a reader?
  • What does it look like to make a purposeful choice instead of a random one?
