Unit Plan 2 (Grade 5 Band): Instrument Setup & Care
Grade 5 band unit teaching proper instrument assembly, handling, posture, and maintenance to support safe playing and a steady, characteristic tone.
Focus: Learn proper assembly, handling, and maintenance of band instruments to support a characteristic tone.
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: Band (Performing • Presenting • Reflecting)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (1–2 weeks), 30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students learn how to assemble, hold, and care for their band instruments safely and correctly. They practice identifying major instrument parts, following a step-by-step setup routine, and using beginning posture, embouchure/breathing, hand position, and stick/mallet control. Students connect careful handling and setup to their first attempts at a steady, characteristic tone, understanding that good sound starts with good fundamentals.
Essential Questions
- Why is correct instrument setup important for sound, safety, and success in band?
- How do posture, embouchure/breathing, hand position, and stick/mallet control affect the way we sound?
- What are safe and responsible ways to handle and care for band instruments?
- How does learning proper setup and care help us feel more confident as beginning band musicians?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Identify the main parts of their instrument and follow a step-by-step assembly routine with minimal teacher help.
- Demonstrate correct posture, embouchure/breathing, hand position, or stick/mallet control appropriate to their instrument.
- Handle the instrument safely during assembly, playing, and put-away, avoiding actions that could cause damage.
- Produce a steady tone (or controlled stroke pattern for percussion) for at least 4 counts using basic setup and technique.
- Describe at least two care routines (e.g., swabbing, oiling valves, proper storage) and explain how they support a characteristic tone and instrument health.
Standards Alignment — 5th Grade Band (custom, NAfME-style)
- BD:Pr4.5a — Demonstrate correct instrument setup and basic technique (posture, embouchure/breathing, hand position, stick/mallet control) to produce a characteristic tone.
- Example: Students assemble instruments correctly and produce a steady tone for 4 counts.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can name and point to the main parts of my instrument and assemble it in the correct order.
- I can sit or stand in good posture and use hand position or stick grip that helps me play well.
- I can use air/embouchure or stick/mallet control to make a steady tone or stroke, not squeaks or random hits.
- I can show at least two ways I will care for my instrument (cleaning, storage, handling).
- I can explain how correct setup and care help my instrument sound better and last longer.
