Unit Plan 6 (Grade 5 Counselor): Cooperation, Leadership, and Group Roles
Teach Grade 5 students cooperation, group roles, respectful leadership, shared responsibility, and problem-solving strategies for successful group work.
Focus: Help students strengthen cooperation, leadership, and shared responsibility during group work. Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: School Counseling (Collaboration • Leadership • Problem-Solving)
Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This Grade 5 counseling lesson helps students understand that successful group work requires more than being placed together. Strong groups use roles, respectful communication, shared responsibility, and problem-solving strategies so that everyone can contribute. Since Grade 5 students are preparing for increased independence and more complex group expectations, this lesson emphasizes leadership that includes listening, encouraging, and helping the group stay fair.
Students participate in a short group challenge using assigned roles. They then analyze common group problems such as one person taking over, one person doing all the work, classmates arguing, or group members refusing to participate. The goal is to help students recognize the size and impact of group problems and decide whether the situation needs self-management, group problem-solving, or adult help.
Essential Questions
- What does strong cooperation look like during group work?
- How can group roles help students share responsibility fairly?
