Unit Plan 20 (Grade 5 Library): Using Print, Audio, Video, and Digital Sources Together

Focus: Help students use print, audio, video, and digital sources together to build understanding of a topic. Students compare how different formats present ideas and information, reflect on what each one adds, and practice using books, technology, materials, and shared spaces responsibly while participating thoughtfully in discussion and sharing.

Grade Level: 5

Subject Area: Library (Media LiteracyInquiryDiscussion/Participation)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This unit helps Grade 5 students understand that information does not come from only one kind of source. In school and in life, students increasingly encounter ideas through print texts, audio clips, videos, and digital tools, and each format can contribute something different to understanding. Through a small topic set built around one subject, students compare how formats communicate ideas, notice what each one adds, and reflect on how using multiple media can deepen learning. Because Grade 5 students are ready to think more intentionally about media choices and responsible tool use, this unit also emphasizes respectful participation and safe, thoughtful use of shared materials and technology.

Essential Questions

  • How do print, audio, video, and digital sources help us understand a topic in different ways?
  • What does each format add that another format might not provide as clearly?
  • How can I use books, devices, materials, and shared spaces responsibly while working with multiple source types?
  • How can respectful discussion help me compare media and think more deeply about what I learned?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Explore and compare information presented through print, audio, video, and digital sources.
  2. Explain what one format adds to understanding that another format may not provide as clearly.
  3. Try different media, formats, and tools with curiosity and a willingness to grow as a reader and learner.
  4. Use books, technology, materials, and shared spaces safely, responsibly, and respectfully during library work.
  5. Participate respectfully in reading, listening, viewing, discussing, creating, and sharing.
  6. (Optional Sessions) Strengthen media comparison through repeated practice, more independent source use, and clearer reflection on how multiple formats support learning.

Standards Alignment — 5th Grade (AASL-based Custom)

  • L:S5.5b — Try new genres, formats, tools, media, and response methods with curiosity and a willingness to grow as a reader and learner.

  • I can try less-familiar media or tools with curiosity and a willingness to learn.
  • I can use books, technology, materials, and shared spaces responsibly while working.
  • I can participate respectfully in discussion and sharing about what I learned from different media.
