Unit Plan 2 (Grade 5 PE): Soccer — Possession & Finishing

Grade 5 soccer unit plan on possession, passing triangles, dribbling, and finishing through small-sided games, teamwork, and smart shot choices.

Unit Plan 2 (Grade 5 PE): Soccer — Possession & Finishing

Focus: Develop possession, passing triangles, and finishing in small-sided soccer by helping students dribble with control, move to open space, complete simple build-up play, and recognize high-percentage shots.

Grade Level: 5

Subject Area: Physical Education (Invasion GamesSkill ApplicationTeam Tactics & Effort)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students build soccer understanding through small-sided activities that emphasize keeping the ball, supporting teammates, and choosing good times to pass or shoot. The unit begins with gate dribbling to build comfort using both feet and controlling speed in crowded spaces. Students then move into 2v1 keep-away and 4v4 soccer with simple tactical rules that encourage build-up play, passing triangles, and smarter shot selection. Throughout the unit, students practice adjusting the force, timing, and direction of passes and shots based on defenders, distance, and available space while staying actively engaged for most of class.

Essential Questions

  • How can we keep possession of the ball by moving, spacing out, and supporting teammates?
  • What makes a high-percentage shot better than a rushed or low-quality shot?
  • How do players use passing triangles and simple teamwork to create better attacking chances?
  • How can I adjust the force, timing, and direction of my dribble, pass, or shot based on the situation?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Dribble, pass, and shoot a soccer ball with control using both dominant and non-dominant feet in game-like situations.
  2. Combine soccer skills in sequence, such as dribble → pass → move to space → receive → shoot, during small-sided play.
  3. Move to open space on offense and adjust position on defense to support team play and maintain safety.
  4. Adjust the force, speed, and timing of passes and shots depending on distance, defenders, and scoring opportunities.
  5. Apply simple offensive strategies such as passing triangles, give-and-go, and choosing high-percentage shots.
  6. Apply basic defensive strategies such as marking, containment, and help defense while staying active throughout class.

Standards Alignment — 5th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.5d – Kicking, Dribbling & Ball Control in Game Play Dribble, pass, and shoot a ball with the feet using both dominant and non-dominant sides, adjusting speed, direction, and force in game contexts.
    • Example: Students maintain control while dribbling through defenders in a soccer game, then pass or shoot accurately at appropriate times.
  • PE:S1.5f – Combining Multiple Skills in Game Sequences Combine multiple skills (dribble, pass, catch, strike, run, dodge, jump, shoot) fluently and appropriately during game-like sequences.
    • Example: In a modified invasion game, a student dribbles to space, passes to a teammate, cuts toward the goal, receives a return pass, and shoots.
  • PE:S2.5a – Space Awareness & Positioning in Team Games Consistently move to open space on offense and adjust positioning on defense to support team play and maintain safety.
    • Example: In 4v4 games, students spread out on offense to create passing lanes and reposition on defense to protect key areas of the court or field.
  • PE:S2.5c – Adjusting Effort, Force, and Timing for Task Demands Adjust speed, force, angle, and timing of movements based on distance, defenders, and type of shot, pass, or throw required.
    • Example: Students throw softly to a nearby teammate but use greater force and a higher angle when throwing over defenders to a distant partner.
  • PE:S2.5d – Offensive Strategies: Creating & Using Advantages Apply basic offensive strategies such as creating numerical advantages, give-and-go, using screens, and selecting high-percentage scoring opportunities.
    • Example: In 3v3 basketball or handball, students set simple screens, drive to draw a defender, then pass to an open teammate for a better shot.
  • PE:S2.5e – Defensive Strategies: Marking, Containment, & Help Defense Apply defensive strategies including marking a player, maintaining proper body position, containing attackers, and providing help defense.
    • Example: Students stay between their assigned player and the goal, communicate switches, and step in to help when a teammate is beaten on defense.
  • PE:S3.5a – Sustained Participation in Moderate-to-Vigorous Activity Participate actively and continuously in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for significant portions of class without frequent off-task behavior.
    • Example: During fitness circuits or small-sided games, students remain engaged and moving, minimizing standing time between turns.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can dribble, pass, and shoot with control using both feet.
  • I can move to open space so my teammates have a passing option.
  • I can help create a triangle or simple passing pattern instead of crowding the ball.
  • I can choose a better shot by noticing my angle, distance, and whether defenders are in the way.
  • I can stay active and involved for most of class by moving, supporting, and getting back on defense.
