Unit Plan 13 (Grade 7 Social Studies): The Rise of Japan and Feudal Culture

Focus: Compare Japan’s geography (archipelago, climate, resources), samurai code (bushidō), and government structure (emperor–shogun–daimyō–samurai); explain how environment and power shaped society.

Grade Level: 7

Subject Area: Social Studies (World History • Geography • Civics)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students explore how islands, mountains, and seas influenced settlement, agriculture, and trade in Japan and how those conditions interacted with political authority and the samurai ethic. Learners analyze roles and responsibilities within feudal structures and compare perspectives across status, gender, and region.

Essential Questions

  • How did landforms, climate, and resources shape Japan’s settlements, economy, and political centers?
  • How did authority and legitimacy operate among emperor, shogun, daimyō, and samurai?
  • In what ways did bushidō and social roles organize daily life—and for whom?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Describe how archipelago geography (mountainous terrain, arable valleys, currents) influenced settlement and trade (Geo.3).
  2. Explain feudal government structure and how rulers claimed power and legitimacy (Civ.1–2).
  3. Identify roles, rights, and responsibilities across classes (peasants, artisans, merchants, samurai) and compare experiences (Civ.3; Hist.3).
  4. Analyze bushidō ideals using excerpts/images and evaluate their social impacts (Hist.3).
  5. Construct a claim connecting geography ↔ governance ↔ culture, supported by maps and sources.

Standards Alignment — 7th Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 7.C3.Geo.3 — Landforms, climate, resources influence development and interaction.
  • 7.C3.Civ.1 — Forms of government and authority in world history.
  • 7.C3.Civ.2 — Power, authority, legitimacy in historical contexts.
  • 7.C3.Civ.3 — Roles/rights/responsibilities in political/social systems.
  • 7.C3.Hist.3 — Diverse perspectives/experiences across societies.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can point to specific geographic features and explain how they shaped where and how people lived.
  • I can diagram Japan’s feudal government and explain who had power vs. legitimacy.
  • I can use evidence (maps, sources) to show how bushidō and social roles affected different groups.
