Unit Plan 9 (Grade K Social Studies): Community Helpers Around Us

Focus: Help children recognize community helpers (and simple authority figures) and understand what they do and why their jobs are important. Students learn that helpers provide goods and services that keep our school and neighborhood running and safe.

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Economics • Community)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, children become “community helper detectives” who notice the many people that help us every day—at school, in our neighborhood, and around town. Through stories, pictures, and role-play, they learn about helpers like teachers, principals, firefighters, nurses, mail carriers, bakers, and mechanics. Students also start to understand goods (things we can touch and buy) and services (ways people help us). By the end of the week, each child creates a simple Community Helper page showing a helper, what they do, and why they are important.

Essential Questions

  • Who are the helpers in our school and community?
  • What do community helpers do to keep us safe, healthy, and happy?
  • What is a good and what is a service? Who provides them?
  • Why are community helpers important to our lives?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Name several community helpers and authority figures (e.g., principal, nurse, firefighter, police officer, librarian, mail carrier, baker).
  2. Describe one thing each helper does for others.
  3. Sort simple examples of goods (things) and services (helping actions).
  4. Match common community helpers to the goods or services they provide.
  5. Create a drawing/writing page showing a community helper, what they do, and why their job matters.

Standards Alignment — Kindergarten (C3-based custom)

  • K.C3.Civ.2 — Identify authority figures and community helpers; describe what they do.
  • K.C3.Econ.2 — Identify goods and services and who provides them.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can name some community helpers (like a firefighter or nurse).
  • I can tell one thing a helper does to help people.
  • I can tell the difference between a good (thing) and a service (help).
  • I can match a helper to the good or service they give us.
  • I can make a picture with words that shows a helper and why they are important.
