Unit Plan 8 (Grade K Social Studies): My Family and My Home

Focus: Help children describe their families and types of homes, and notice how families care for one another and share traditions. Students explore who is in their family, where they live, and special ways they show love, help, and celebrate together.

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: Social Studies (History • Geography • Community)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, children become “family storytellers” who talk about who is in their family and what their home is like. They see that families and homes can look different but all are places where people care for each other. Students learn about family traditions—foods, songs, games, or celebrations—and connect them to the familiar place called home. By the end of the week, each child shares a simple “My Family and My Home” page or mini-book.

Essential Questions

  • Who is in my family, and how do we help and care for each other?
  • What does my home look like, and what do we do there?
  • How can families be different and also the same?
  • What are some traditions or special things my family does together?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Name and describe family members (e.g., parent, grandparent, sibling, caregiver).
  2. Identify their home as a familiar place and tell what happens there (sleep, eat, play, talk).
  3. Describe at least one family tradition or special activity they do together.
  4. Notice similarities and differences among classmates’ families and homes in a respectful way.
  5. Create a simple drawing/writing page showing their family and home with a short dictated or written sentence.

Standards Alignment — Kindergarten (C3-based custom)

  • K.C3.Hist.4 — Describe family and cultural traditions; note similarities and differences.
  • K.C3.Geo.1 — Identify and describe familiar places (home, school, neighborhood).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can say who is in my family.
  • I can tell something we do at home together.
  • I can describe one special tradition or family activity.
  • I can say how my family/home is similar to and different from others.
  • I can make a picture with words that shows my family and my home.
