Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Real-World LearningTopic BooksEarly Inquiry)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit helps children understand that books can teach us about the world around us. The librarian introduces a simple topic such as weather, animals, seasons, plants, nature, community helpers, neighborhoods, or places people live and work. Children listen to books, look closely at pictures, explore related objects or visuals, and talk about what they notice.

The unit should feel hands-on, visual, and connected to children’s everyday experiences. The librarian may read from more than one topic book, display a basket of related books, and offer simple center tasks such as matching pictures, sorting objects, drawing what they learned, or exploring a listening or digital picture tool. The goal is to help children see the library as a place where stories, information, pictures, and conversation help them learn about real people, places, nature, and community.
