Unit Plan 4 (PreK Library): Choosing a Book

Focus: Introduce PreK children to the idea that they can choose books based on interest, pictures, topic, or recommendation. Children practice browsing a small curated basket, looking at covers, noticing pictures, choosing a book that interests them, and sharing a simple reason for their choice.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Book ChoiceCuriosityEarly Reader Identity)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit helps children begin seeing themselves as book choosers. At this age, children are not expected to search the full library independently or make complex reading decisions. Instead, the librarian provides a few carefully curated baskets and models how to browse gently, look at covers, notice pictures, and choose a book that seems interesting.

Children may choose a book because it has a truck, puppy, dinosaur, baby, favorite color, funny picture, or familiar character. The librarian validates these simple reasons as meaningful early reading choices. This unit also encourages curiosity as children notice details, ask questions, and try books or materials that may be new to them.

Essential Questions

  • How can I choose a book that interests me?
  • What can I notice on a cover or in a picture?
  • How can pictures, topics, or recommendations help me choose?
  • How can I try a new book or library experience with help?
