Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit revisits two of the most important early library habits: choosing books and caring for them. By this point in the year, children may have clear preferences for certain books, topics, baskets, characters, or formats. The librarian helps students notice those preferences while continuing to encourage thoughtful browsing, gentle handling, and responsible return routines.

The unit also gives children repeated practice with book care. Students practice carrying books with care, turning pages gently, keeping books off the floor, placing books in the correct basket or return bin, and following checkout or browsing expectations if those are part of the library program. The goal is to help children feel confident choosing books they enjoy while remembering that library favorites are shared materials that need care.

Essential Questions

  • How can I choose a library favorite?
