Unit Plan 29 (PreK Library): Everyone Has Favorite Books

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Reader IdentityInclusionBook Choice)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit reinforces the idea that the library welcomes many kinds of readers and many kinds of book choices. Some children may love animal books, while others prefer trucks, fairy tales, funny stories, weather books, dinosaurs, families, or books with songs and repetition. The librarian uses a simple book tasting or basket rotation to help children explore several options and notice that classmates may choose different favorites.

The goal is to help children build early reader identity while also developing respect for others’ preferences. Children may choose a basket, point to a favorite cover, share one thing they liked, or try a book that is new to them. The librarian emphasizes that no single favorite is the “right” favorite. The library supports all learners by offering many books, ideas, formats, and topics.
