Unit Plan 31 (PreK Library): Exploring Books, Media, and Tools

Focus: Help PreK children explore the library as a place with many ways to read, listen, view, create, build, dramatize, and learn. Children rotate through books, audio stories, puppets, simple digital media, topic baskets, and maker-style response stations while trying new tools, responding creatively, and using materials, technology, and shared spaces safely.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Books/Media/ToolsCreative ExplorationResponsible Use)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit gives children a culminating opportunity to explore the many ways learning can happen in a modern library. Instead of focusing on only one type of material, students rotate through a variety of familiar library experiences such as book browsing, audio stories, puppet retelling, topic baskets, picture cards, simple digital media, drawing, building, or maker-style response stations. The librarian frames the library as a place where children can read, listen, look, wonder, create, and share.

Because PreK children are still learning how to use shared materials and technology responsibly, the unit emphasizes safe and respectful exploration. Children practice trying new books and tools, responding creatively to stories and topics, sharing space, and cleaning up materials after use. The goal is to help students leave the unit understanding that libraries offer many different ways to learn and that confident library learners use each tool with care.
