Unit Plan 17 (PreK Library): Exploring Library Topics
PreK library topic exploration unit where children use books, pictures, objects, sorting, and conversation to build curiosity and early inquiry skills.
Focus: Help PreK children explore a simple, high-interest library topic such as pets, weather, trucks, bugs, animals, plants, or community helpers through books, pictures, objects, and conversation. Children use visuals and read-alouds to begin learning about a topic, sort or group materials in simple ways, and try new books, tools, and learning experiences with guidance.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Library (Topic Exploration • Early Inquiry • Sorting/Grouping)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This PreK library unit introduces children to topic exploration in a very simple and developmentally appropriate way. Instead of asking students to complete formal research, the librarian gathers a small basket of books, pictures, objects, and visuals around one engaging topic, such as pets, weather, trucks, bugs, ocean animals, plants, or community helpers. Children listen to more than one source, look closely at pictures, notice what is the same and different, and begin sharing what they are learning.
The unit helps children understand that the library is a place to explore questions and learn about the world. Students might sort topic pictures, match objects to book pages, choose a book from the topic basket, or dictate one thing they noticed or learned. The goal is to build curiosity, early information literacy, and simple organization habits while keeping the experience playful, visual, and concrete.
