Unit Plan 2 (PreK Library): How We Care for Books
PreK library unit on book care, gentle handling, safe material use, return routines, and helping children care for shared library books.
Focus: Help PreK children understand that library books are special shared materials that need gentle handling, safe use, and careful return routines. Children practice holding books carefully, turning pages gently, keeping books off the floor, using materials safely, and returning books to the proper place with help.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Library (Book Care • Shared Materials • Library Routines)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This PreK library unit teaches children that library books are shared materials that everyone helps care for. Because young children are still learning how to manage books physically, the librarian uses clear modeling, visual reminders, playful examples, and repeated practice. Children learn how to carry a book with care, open it gently, turn pages slowly, keep it away from food, water, feet, and floors, and place it in the correct return area with support.
The unit should be concrete, visual, and playful. The librarian may exaggerate silly “oops” examples of unsafe book behavior, then invite children to identify what needs fixing. Children can practice carrying books, using gentle hands, sorting picture cards into safe and unsafe book choices, and helping return materials to a bin or basket. The goal is for children to begin seeing themselves as helpers who take care of books and library spaces for everyone.
