Unit Plan 15 (PreK Library): Library Centers and Choices

Focus: Help PreK children practice making simple library center choices while using books, tools, technology, and shared spaces safely. Children rotate through carefully selected centers such as book browsing, listening center, retelling basket, drawing response, picture matching, or building a story scene while learning to choose, try, use, clean up, and transition with support.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (CentersChoice-MakingResponsible Material Use)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit introduces or strengthens simple center-based routines. In many early childhood library specials, children participate in a short read-aloud and then move into carefully structured centers that allow them to browse books, listen to stories, retell with props, draw a response, build a story scene, or explore picture-based materials. Because PreK children are still learning how to make choices and use shared materials responsibly, the librarian keeps center options limited, visual, and predictable.

The purpose of this unit is to help children understand that library centers are not just free play. Each center gives children a way to read, listen, look, create, retell, explore, or respond. Children practice choosing a center, staying with an activity briefly, using materials safely, sharing space, and cleaning up with support. The goal is to build independence slowly while helping children enjoy a variety of library learning experiences.

  • How can I make a library center choice?
  • How can I use books, tools, technology, and materials safely?
  • How can trying new library centers help me learn?
  • How can I clean up and transition when center time is finished?
