Unit Plan 20 (PreK Library): Listening Centers and Audio Stories
PreK library unit teaching safe listening center routines, audio story participation, headphone care, and simple story responses through drawing, talking, or movement.
Focus: Help PreK children use a listening center or teacher-supported audio story experience safely and meaningfully. Children practice using headphones, listening to an audio story, participating respectfully, and responding in a simple way through drawing, talking, pointing, movement, or sharing one thing they heard.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Library (Audio Stories • Listening Centers • Responsible Technology Use)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This PreK library unit introduces or strengthens the use of listening centers and audio stories. Many young children enjoy hearing stories read aloud by a teacher, but audio stories offer another way to experience books, rhythm, voice, sound, and language. In a library special, this may happen as a whole-group teacher-supported activity, a small listening station, or one center within a rotation.
Because PreK children are still learning how to use technology and shared materials responsibly, the librarian explicitly models how to wear headphones, adjust volume with help, keep cords safe, listen with care, and return materials when finished. After listening, children respond simply by drawing, pointing to a picture, retelling one part, sharing one thing they heard, or choosing a picture card that matches the story. The goal is to help children understand that listening is an active library experience.
