Unit Plan 35 (PreK Library): My Favorite Kind of Library Learning

Focus: Help PreK children reflect on the kinds of library learning experiences they enjoy most, such as storytime, nonfiction books, audio stories, puppets, drawing, centers, topic baskets, building, movement, and creative response. Children identify preferences, try familiar or new library experiences with guidance, and express their ideas through stories, play, art, media, making, dramatizing, or talking.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Student VoiceLibrary PreferencesCreative Reflection)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit helps children recognize that library learning can happen in many enjoyable ways. Some children may love storytime, while others may prefer looking at nonfiction pictures, listening to audio stories, using puppets, drawing favorite parts, building story settings, browsing topic baskets, or rotating through centers. The librarian gives children a chance to revisit a few familiar options and notice which experiences feel most engaging to them.

The unit supports student voice in a developmentally appropriate way. Children may point to a favorite activity card, choose a center, draw their favorite kind of library learning, show a puppet response, or explain their preference with a simple phrase such as “I like stories,” “I like animals,” or “I like drawing.” The goal is to close the year with joy, reflection, and a growing awareness that each child can participate in library learning in meaningful ways.
