Subject Area: Library (Group DiscussionRespectful ListeningStory Response)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit helps children practice sharing ideas in a group setting. During library time, children often respond to read-alouds, pictures, songs, questions, and shared activities, but they need explicit support to know how to wait, listen, and contribute. The librarian models simple group conversation routines such as looking at the speaker, waiting for a turn, using kind listening, and adding one idea when invited.

The unit should stay concrete and supportive. Children may respond to a picture, share a favorite part of a story, join a group retelling, participate in a turn-and-talk, or use sentence starters such as “I noticed…” “I liked…” “I wonder…” or “I think…”. The goal is not long discussion, but helping children understand that library conversations work best when everyone has a chance to listen, think, and share.

Essential Questions
